Here at Drift, we like to mix it up from time to time. For Mojo Kick’s “Live at The Bear’s Den” music video, we did just that. Conway & Brecken hooked up with Jay DeLuca from The Bear’s Den Studio in Attleboro, MA to record a live performance for the band Mojo Kick. Drift is represented in audio engineering, mixing, and video editing aspects of the project.

Mojo Kick is an energetic young collective from the Boston area, mixing all the raw grit and wide-open riffs of a stripped-down blues outfit with the virtuosity and technical prowess of seasoned professionals. We traveled down to The Bear’s Den to help out with engineering, tones-tweaking, and a bit of mixing with our good friend Jay DeLuca. Jay has lent his expertise to Drift’s projects for Speed the Harvest, Dakota, Les Racquet and more.

The video is currently under the careful scrutiny of our own Nick Brecken. Nick is pouring over several different live takes of the track “Wild Girl” and video framed and shot by Nick Stevens. We’ll post the video as soon as it hits the web. Stay tuned!

Creating an identity system for Mildly Geeky was an exciting project to work on. I knew from the get go it would be fun and I would be able to be a bit more creative, as Patrick is a creative person himself – he is a website coder and builder. I wanted to capture the essence of “Mildly” Geeky, by playing with fun typefaces.

Using a script typeface with a blocky serif typeface really put the emphasis on the “mildly” part of the title, and made it fun.
The color scheme was based off of the green color Patrick had told me he preferred.

I knew the business cards would need a clear, legible typeface that was easy to read. I used a serif typeface for the contact information on the front, then played with inverting the colors from the logo for the back of the card. You can see that the this side reflects the logo with the colors, and typefaces.

As for the website design, I wanted to bring all the elements from the logo in. I wanted to use some texture, and create a clean and professional, yet creative and enjoyable design. Once the website design was complete, I used simpler elements from it to create the mobile site design for Mildly Geeky.

This was an amazing project to work on. I can’t wait to see the finished product live, online. Thanks again Patrick!

The Big Sway is a band out out of central/western Massachusetts. They came to Drift Design Studios and asked us to build them a website for their fans. They wanted to incorporate photos, videos, artwork, original recordings, a blog and more. But most importantly, they wanted something that reflected them as a band. You want your artwork to reflect your music, your music to reflect your passion, and your passion to reflect off of you. It’s funny to think that a bands image can play such a giant role in success (or failure… like Creed or any other buttrock band) but it is true. When you have the total package, and it seems sincere, than your going to gain fans.

I took the extreme, psychedelic and sporadic qualities I hear in their music, while considering their persona’s and tried to incorporate all that emotion into the layout of the site. I tried to settle on a site that was modern, and had modern features, but would give the site an edge and make it look raw, like a skate magazine or a new-age street zine. I think it suits the band very well, and I hope they like it. The site is in transition right now and won’t be available online until we work on the kinks, and handoff to the Big Sway, but there’s a screen grab attached to this post of the main page and the work in progress. Check it out.

I was commissioned by Guitar Messenger this past weekend to do some camera work for a DVD. It’s for an online guitar website, and is an Instructional DVD for metal guitarists. I got to hang out with Per Nilsson of Scar Symmetry, and watch him shred the guitar all weekend. It was a pretty cool opportunity, the people I worked with were all awesome, and laid back. We ended up having a lot of fun, and Per was the man. Here’s a quick picture of the scene where we were shooting, I took some pictures and will have them up on the site soon. The video on the other hand, that’s top secret! and can only be found exclusively on Guitar Messenger.com Go check out the site, there is some unbelievable content on there. But beware, you need to play guitar close to a professional level to keep up with these guys! Super talented people.

One of our latest clients Key Bridge Strategies, a private consulting firm from Washington D.C recently needed an emergency website and business card made within 24 hours notice. Apparently there was going to be some important meetings held and Key Bridge needed a face lift immediately in order to impress any visitors that would come to the website after the meeting. So Drift Design Studios gave them a quick overhaul. Since the website we’re developing for the company couldn’t be done overnight, we redesigned the logo, and created an interactive landing page that could capture visitors email addresses and notify them once the website is up and running. This way visitors to the site can at least realize that the site is under construction, and Key Bridge Strategies doesn’t lose any interest from visitors by keeping the visitors informed of their redesign progress.

It was a quick fix in a pinch, but a great case study to show you how quickly and efficiently we work for our clients, and also to show how we approach web design with a business mindset. Some other companies may have just thrown up an “Under Construction” page that says check back soon. But why not tell your visitors when exactly to check back, and why not gather information about your visitors even when your website is technically offline. We are results driven, and we want to bring results to all of our clients. Check back soon for more updates.

This weekend, Nicholas Brecken and Mike Spillane of DDS are shooting a music video for The Big Sway. The song we’re going to be shooting the video for is called “The Cheese” and can be heard here:

We have been working diligently this week to finish off the Shot list for Friday night and Saturday night’s filming. It’s going to be a long weekend of shooting, but the concept of the video and the party scenes we have planned will hopefully be a success. Our goal is to bite the bullet and try to finish off the shooting on set in 2 days. Wish us luck.
